THE HERSTAR PHILOSOPHY

I believe that everything has innate potential waiting to be explored, and through that, appreciated. I make garments using material that was destined for the landfill. I am most inspired by the possibilities living inside each material. Everything has an alternate reality of purpose or appeal. There is always opportunity for transformation, there is always room for a second chance. This applies to all things we think we know, people, cultural norms, good times, and “bad” times.

I often feel like God's hands are on mine, I don't want more control than I need to have. My goal is to be a vessel for creative energy to move through. As I’m making work, I like to let the material tell me what it is meant to become. Questions arise, and I get all of my creative fulfillment in the process of finding the answers as I go. The garment is a physical manifestation of this journey.

I find a lot of enjoyment creating wearable art and bringing it out in the world. Art, especially the wearable kind, shifts perspectives and brings joy. The most impactful feedback on my work is often given and received in a place where art does not commonly interact with the public... The grocery store, the gas station, a walk in the park. By breathing new life into discarded or unexpected material, and wearing it for others to see, viewers’ eyes are opened.

Creating with the environment, resources, and reality people live amongst inherently connects them to the bigger picture of their impact. You can use your gifts to change the world. You can make something out of nothing. When we shift pre-determined perspectives, we give hope to the ordinary by harnessing the value of its potential.
